Message from the City Council President

In autumn 2023, Viana do Castelo will once again have the privilege of hosting L’Étape Portugal, a cycling event for everyone with the official seal of the Tour de France. This is the second edition of the event, which debuted in our city last year and which demonstrated its value and importance. That's why, on October 1st, we experience this great event again!

L'Étape Portugal by Tour de France challenges everyone to an adrenaline-pumping journey, over 147, 100 or 50 kilometres. Before, on September 30th, the Family Ride aims to promote the happiness of cycling as a family over 7 kilometers. Because we know that good habits and healthy lifestyles contribute to the well-being of the people of Viennese, the European City of Sports 2023 joined forces with L’Étape Portugal to provide this moment of pure magic for children and adults alike.

Therefore, the biggest cycling event in the world will once again be present in Viana do Castelo, in a sporting event that will undoubtedly contribute to the tourism promotion of the city and the municipality.

It is always with enthusiasm that our municipality hosts major sporting events and, as this is a city passionate about cycling, our residents welcome the sport's events with joy and fervor.

As mayor, I know that being associated with a name like the Tour de France represents an added responsibility. Therefore, I hope that this second edition will allow us to combine sport with promoting the territory and the best that Viana do Castelo has to offer. I am sure that the locals will once again welcome this event with open arms, with the hospitality they are renowned for.

Once again, I hope that, between pedal strokes, athletes can enjoy the race, the beauty of our landscapes and our architecture so that they carry Viana do Castelo in their hearts!
